As you prepare for your new addition to your family you may feel overwhelmed and not sure how to prepare, there are many different products you will need for your new kitten which I will provide a list of when you decide to adopt your new baby. Sphynx kittens are an exotic breed and do require more care than your average cat.
When receiving your new baby, you may wonder what to feed them, how often they should eat, how will I know if they are hungry? As a breeder I free feed kittens all day as they are growing much like a small child and they need those calories to grow. Sphynx cats also have a faster metabolism due to the fact they use more energy to create heat for their naked bodies. Sphynx also have very sensitive digestion tracts, because of this I recommend when receiving your baby that you keep them on the same brand of kitten food that they have been accustomed to, this will help avoid stomach issues, or diarrhea. If you do choses to change their food it will need to be done slowly and progressively over time to avoid these issues.
Your new baby will be acclimated to baths when you take them home, but you will still need to work on this process over time with patience, one thing that can help keep your little one calm is to avoid running the water while they are in the room as they are scared of the sound of water. Sphynx kittens do require a bath about once a week due to the oil that can accumulate on their coat. I do recommend my Organic Pet shampoo that has been formulated for this breed specifically, it is 100% natural ingredients, and is also moisturizing for their skin. Some products that contain detergents can cause their coat to become dry over time.
Sphynx cats do not have hair or have a very small amount of hair in their ears, this can cause a-lot of buildup in the ear canal, which can lead to a complete blockage of the canal if regular cleaning of the ear is not maintained. When cleaning be sure to use a soft cloth or a wet wipe and gently clean inside their ears. Cleaning their ears after a bath is best as the wax will have softened during this time.
To clean your Sphynx cats eyes you will need to use a warm damp cloth and gently wipe around the eye area. Avoid using any type of detergent as this can cause irritation to the eye. The House of Cats shampoo is safe around the eye area and can be used during baths around the eyes.
When I first started breeding I tried many different types and brands of litter, I eventually found one that I love which is the paper pellet litter. This litter is one the cleanest to use and doesn’t create such a mess in your home. I do recommend you continue using this litter as it is what your baby has been raised on, if you chose to change your litter you should do this slowly over time.
I would recommend finding a Veterinary that has experience with hairless babies as they are a very exotic breed, you will also need to find a licensed cardiologist that can perform an Echocardiogram on your baby each year to make sure their hearts are staying healthy. I also would advise against FIP and FELV vaccines as they can be fatal if your kitten has been exposed to Coronavirus, approximately 90% of cats in a multi cat home have been exposed to, your kitten will break out with a fatal form of FIP if given this vaccine, and there is no treatment.
Never give FIP or FELV vaccines to your hairless kitten/cat. FIP vaccines are often fatal if your cat has been exposed to the corona virus, which 90% of cats in a multiple cat household have been exposed to. They will break out with the fatal form of FIP if given the vaccine; there is no treatment.
